To ensure that natural heating works in your high garden-bed, it is important to correctly fill it with layers.
Therefore, you need to fill your high garden-bed with four approximately equal layers:
- Above the thin drainage layer of gravel, a layer of larger plant remains (twigs, branches etc.) must be created.
- This layer is then covered by a layer of smaller natural waste, for example, cut grass and autumn leaves.
- Next comes the layer of standard garden soil.
- The last layer is a mixed layer of compost and garden soil.
This way the bacteria that appear after grass cutting and participate in the decomposition process have plenty of air supply due to the layer of twigs and larger natural waste, which, in turn, promotes the rotting process and production of heat.
