Air pollution also affects the lifetime of the film. If the greenhouse is close to a road, pollution can severely damage the film surface, reducing light transmission. Dirt can be washed off with water or special products.
Double film, i.e. two layers of film, may be used for greenhouse coverings. The air gap between the layers of film significantly reduces heat loss, but unfortunately also light transmission. The gap between the two layers is provided by a cord tightly stretched between the layers. When constructing a greenhouse with double membranes and creating a gap with cords, the inner membrane should be thinner (preferably with anti-condensation properties) and the outer membrane thicker. For a small greenhouse, 10 cm is sufficient.
The film can be pierced with a nail or a tree, and birds tend to peck at it. In an unheated greenhouse in winter, however, ice crystals that form inside the greenhouse as condensation freezes can damage the covering material. The lifetime of film is shorter than that of glass - 1-12 years depending on its chemical composition.
