Time and sowing of seeds

Tomatoes in pots start growing from mid to late March, just like tomatoes grown in greenhouses.

Pots and substrate

The ideal pot size for growing tomatoes is 12-15 liters. The substrate should be enriched peat with coarser fibers to ensure better aeration of the roots and prevent excessive water accumulation. Pots should have holes in the bottom and sides to encourage root growth.

Grooming

The process of caring for tomatoes in pots includes tying plants, wrapping, pruning, defoliating, limiting flowers, fertilizing, pollinating and harvesting - all of this is similar to caring for tomatoes grown in the soil.

Fertilization

Two methods are used to effectively provide nutrients: long-acting fertilizer granules to be mixed into the substrate, and soluble or liquid fertilizers to be applied during growth.

Selection of varieties

Depending on the growing place (for example, a balcony or a greenhouse) and needs, you should choose suitable tomato varieties - indeterminate, semi-determinant or determinant varieties.

When planting indeterminate tomatoes,

pay attention to how many branches you allow to grow. If it is planned to leave two or three tops, the plants should be planted further from each other - at least 80 cm to 1 m space between the plants will ensure better ventilation and light access. This is important because indeterminate tomatoes grow and branch throughout the growing season until their growth is limited by weather or deliberate pruning of the plants. On the other hand, if it is planned to leave only one top, the plants can be planted closer to each other. The key is to ensure that the plants have enough space for good ventilation and light, which are crucial factors in growing healthy and productive plants.

Determinants are tomatoes

compact plants that reach a limited height, usually no higher than one meter. They are ideal for planting in areas with limited vertical growth, such as small garden beds, pots or greenhouses where height is limited. These types of tomato varieties produce sufficient yields without axillary breakout, which means they are easier to care for compared to indeterminate tomatoes, which continue to grow and flower throughout the season.

Determinant tomato seedlings can be planted more densely,

because they don't spread as wide. Tomato plants do not need complex support, stakes driven into the ground or small support nets are enough to provide the plants with the necessary support and promote better air circulation between the plants, as well as improve access to light. The compact nature of these plants makes them an excellent choice for gardeners who have limited space or want to grow tomatoes in containers or pots.
